In Response to Amina — Blanket Overload

Amina

Off topic: Are you going to do another mood blanket for 2015?

This is the first time I’m responding to a comment with a post, but I think Amina deserves to know what’s up in blanket land for me this year.  😀

It had crossed my mind to do another mood blanket after the first one turned out so well but requests and promises made caused a change in that plan.  To date, I have four blankets on tap for 2015!  Yes I said four!  Nuts … I know, but here’s why:

After staying wrapped up in my mood blanket for 4 days while we went through the “blizzard” in January, my little cousin requested his own throw/blanket.  We went through Ravelry patterns together and he picked this cabled blanket.  According to him, he wants it big enough because he’s taking it to college — college for him is 4 years from now.  Be still my beating heart.  ❤

The yarn is already in my possession, he picked some crazy lime green colour but it’s his blanket, all I am is the maker so I had to accept the colour choice I was given.  He was so very resolute in his colour choice.   😀    The bulky weight should make this project go fairly fast so I’m confident I can get it done (all things being well before the end of the year).  He says he expects it for Christmas since my mood blanket took the entire year.  What a sweet-heart. ❤

The second blanket is more of a decorative throw but I love the look of it and actually started to make it in December.  I didn’t have the yarn used in the video — Bernat Blanket Yarn — which is a velour type, super bulky weight yarn:

Bernat Blanket Yarn

so I used two strands of KnitPicks Brava bulky held together.  The look was okay but still not what I was going for so I ended up scrapping that project.  Then a friend went to Michael’s after Christmas sale where the Bernat yarn was 40% off.  She knew I was not buying yarn this year so she picked it up and called it my “Christmas” gift.  Still not sure if she meant Christmas 2014 or 2015.    😀     Either way, this blanket is back on the 2015 to do list.

The third blanket on tap is a Double Seed Stitch blanket (baby version) for my friend’s son.  I was supposed to do this before he was born.  He’s going to be 2 in July.  :/   In my defense, I did start the Honeycomb pattern for him but it wasn’t working up the way I liked so I’m going to adopt this Purl Soho pattern, making it in stripes as opposed to one solid colour.

And finally, a blanket for me — a free Martin Storey KAL (knit a long) afghan from Rowan Yarns.  This version of it sold me completely so I’m also doing mine in one solid colour rather than multiple colours as the original pattern suggests.

The project is done is squares, then joined and finished off with the cable binding.  The squares shouldn’t take too long but I read that the binding takes a bit of time.  I bought the yarn for this in December — Patons Decor in Eggplant.  Since I’m in no hurry with this one, I’m going to finish the others first then get cracking on this.

It might seem a lot — four blankets in a year but I’m finding that I like projects like these and I don’t mind the length of time they take.  So there you have it Amina … no mood blanket but plenty of others to go around in 2015! 😀

What about you all — any blanket plans for 2015?

You are the true Blanket Queen! All of your choices are wonderful and the lime green one will be a stunner for sure!! I’ve been thinking about crocheting granny squares with leftover yarn for a while now, I should just go for it. Squares should be quick, it’s just the joining together that seems daunting!

Do it!!! You can do the squares in quadrants if you plot your colour scheme. That way you wouldn’t have that much to weave or slip stitch together at the end. 😀 I say go for it!

After already knitting 4 baby blankets for other folks, the next blanket I make will be for myself. I have my eye on some extra chunky yarn knitted on giant needles. They have a similar pattern to that cable blanket. I’ve seen some fabulous baby blankets I’d like to make but I need to get pregnant first, lol

you gotta get married then try! Save the patterns until then. 😛

Y’know…I’ve never knitted a blanket! Perhaps it’s time!

You would totally kill a blanket! Do it in cables … I love, love, love your cable projects! 😀

How’s that for peer pressure? 😀

Hmmm….that sounds vaguely like a challenge, my friend! 😀

I still have a blanket of knit squares on my to do list. I started the project some years ago and scrapped it because I didn’t like the yarn and wasn’t quite feeling the colors together. I hate to commit to starting it this year and then not do it, but I can take on the task of finding the perfect yarn for it. -Nizzy

How about you find the yarn and at least do some squares in 2015? 😛

So glad you replied in depth about your blanket projects. They are all gorgeous and I can’t wait to see your progress. I have several blankets projects going on…too many..hahaha….
    Happy knitting!!

I anticipate traveling to a few different cities this year for medical school interviews. I’ve been planning on collecting yarn from LYS in each city to create a memory blanket. However, the chunky crochet throw inspired me big time and I just got back from Jo Ann’s with a giant hook and a bunch of yarn haha. Can’t wait to see yours all done 🙂

    • Nicky February 26, 2015 / 12:12 pm

I love the idea of your memory blanket. You should still do it! Good luck with those interviews, I know they can be brutal but I’m sure you’ll do just fine.

LOLOLOL! How’s that for enabling? I’m going to start mine this weekend coming or at least by Monday next week all things being well. It goes pretty quickly so I’m definitely tackling that one first. Will post when I’m done only if you promise to post yours too. 😛

Deal! Thank you so much for the well wishes. Can’t wait 🙂

Four blankets! That’s ambitious! But you’ve definitely picked some good patterns 🙂 And your little cousin is making ME all excited and happy! That should be a good blanket

    • Nicky February 25, 2015 / 8:05 pm

Ambitious is an understatement but I’m going to try to knock out the first three by the end of July so I could focus on the Martin Storey one for the rest of the year.

My little cousin is such a sweetheart and has absolutely proven himself to be knitworthy. If this blanket doesn’t survive until he goes to college, I’ll definitely make him another one. I’m going to make sure I pray for him during the stitching.

I swear I always have a billion baby blankets to do in a year. My friends have a circular crib so I want to knit their baby girl the Solaria blanket. I also promised my cousin I’d make her a blanket for her first apartment in Chicago. I’ve been contemplating what bulky yarn but the only way it will get completed is if the yarn is of a huge weight. Then I saw a gorgeous super bulky blanket on Instagram this morning and know that I need to make that for myself for snuggling on the couch with Cher 🙂

    • Nicky February 25, 2015 / 7:21 pm

I know you’re another blanket Queen so I’m glad you spoke up! 😀 Happy not to be the only one. For my little cousin’s blanket, I’m using the Bernat Softee Chunky. The weight is decent, I only hope it washes well. If you can find that one in stores close to you maybe you can use that brand for your cousin’s blanket. Send me the IG link to the one you saw which would be perfect for you and Ms.Cher The Doggy Diva! ❤
